knx for leed solutions blind control inphographyHave an efficient control system for motorized blinds and shutter is essential to achieve a significant reduction of energy resources, both lighting, maximizing natural light and air conditioning, building or avoiding direct sunlight, according to each season.

Furthermore, by suitable control systems blinds and shutters, you may avoid light pollution outside when the outside light is low, near dusk.

This helps create strategies for obtaining LEED credits according to several specifications of this standard .

In the control system of blinds and shutters mainly engaged 3 types of products:

KNshutter actutators are responsible for carrying interior blinds or curtains at the appropriate level dynamically to obtain or avoid direct solar radiation through shading depending on temperature in each season.

KNWeather Station is able to measure different variables useful in establishing energy efficiency actions and control strategies that help achieve LEED. Knowing precisely the outside temperature, if it is day or night, if it's raining, wind speed, solar azimuth and the level of external brightness is very useful for efficient programming blinds and internal blinds motorized in a building.

Switches,  Controllers or KNRoom Controllers are responsible for providing user control system of blinds and shutters, with its keypads and displays representing states with the position of the blind and monitoring all the weather station variables send.

Thanks to these three control elements can be established control policies, based on automatic controls and simultaneously give all control to the user if they want to change specific situations.

Savings from lighting according to requirements

In order to avoid light pollution, if the building has motorised interior shades on the windows and motorised shutters on the external part of the windows, the emission of light to the exterior can be limited, this can be achieved by lowering these mechanisms that stop the light from passing from the inside to the outside of the building.

These can be lowered automatically by means of integrated twilight sensors in KNX weather stations that measure the external light and allow natural light in during the day, and bring the shades and blinds down at night, just as in regular homes.

Although it depends on the weather in the area, it is possible, especially in temperate regions, to harness the effects of sunlight on glass surfaces around the building. In the winter months, therefore, when the sun is low, solar radiation can naturally warm up the areas near the south-facing façade (in the northern hemisphere) or the north-facing façade (in the southern hemisphere).

In this situation, the KNX control system is in charge of rolling up the blinds and shutters, by shutter actuators,  and allowing as much light and heat through as possible to assist the heating system naturally during the cold season.

The KNX standard allows for a range of global strategies in the use of energy as well as its monitoring to get as many points as possible within the credit EAc1. The lighting control system can produce very significant savings, which have a direct impact on obtaining LEED points.
